Burton Roofing are a fantastic local roofing supplier that we have been using for years. They are the distributor for Cupa slates which we used at Rise Hall which are widely accepted to be the very best. Decent slates will give you 100 years of trouble free living and is well worth the investment. At the other end of the scale poor quality slate could only last a few months before they begin to crack from one nail hole to the other, flake apart or discolour.

There is a massive difference between good quality slates and poor. British and European standards for natural slates is called BSEN - 12326. What this does is gives a grading for the quality and durability of slates based on their resistance to rust T1, T2, T3, tendancy to discolouration from pollution S1, S2, S3 and water absorbtion A1, A2, A3. The lower the number the better they are and you want to try and avoid ever using a 3 for anything other than playing with your children with a bit of chalk.

Hunting down the right slate is tricky so its probably worth going to a reputable company who will pick the best slates to sell on.
